The cylinders of a multicylinder engine are arranged to have their power strokes in succession, and the order in which the cylinders work is called the 'firing order' of the engine. For smoothest running, the power strokes should be spaced at equal intervals, each interval being equal to the number of degrees per cycle of operations (720° for a fourstroke engine) divided by the number of cylinders.
